When you’re shopping for a new jacket—whether online or in-store—you’ll often see terms like breathable, windproof, and water-resistant. They all sound like signs of quality, but they don’t mean the same thing. To find the right jacket for your needs, it’s important to understand what these labels actually describe and how to read the material specifications.
What Does “Breathable” Mean?
A breathable jacket allows heat and moisture from your body to escape while still protecting you from wind and light rain. This is especially important if you’re active—running, hiking, biking, or skiing—because trapped moisture can make you feel clammy and cold.
Breathability is often measured by how much water vapor can pass through a square meter of fabric in 24 hours (expressed as g/m²/24h). The higher the number, the better the breathability. Around 5,000 g/m²/24h is fine for everyday wear, while high-performance outdoor jackets can reach 15,000–20,000 g/m²/24h or more.
Common breathable materials include membranes like Gore-Tex, eVent, and Pertex Shield, as well as lighter softshell fabrics and cotton blends designed for active use.
What Does It Mean When a Jacket Is Windproof?
A windproof jacket blocks cold air from passing through the fabric, which makes a big difference in comfort on blustery days. Even a mild breeze can make the temperature feel much colder, so wind protection is key if you spend time outdoors.
Windproof jackets usually have a tightly woven fabric or a thin membrane that prevents air from penetrating. Many softshells are partially wind-resistant, while hard-shell and rain jackets are typically fully windproof.
A quick test: hold the fabric up to your mouth and try to blow through it. If you can’t feel air passing through, it’s windproof.
Water-Resistant or Waterproof – What’s the Difference?
This is where many people get confused. A water-resistant jacket can handle light rain or drizzle, but not prolonged exposure. The fabric is treated with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating that causes water to bead up and roll off. Over time, this coating wears off, but you can restore it with a spray-on or wash-in treatment.
A waterproof jacket, on the other hand, has a membrane or coating that completely blocks water from getting through—even under pressure, like when you’re sitting on a wet bench or carrying a backpack. Waterproofness is measured in millimeters of water column pressure. A jacket rated at 5,000 mm is suitable for light rain, while 10,000–20,000 mm or more is ideal for heavy rain or snow.
In short: water-resistant = light rain. Waterproof = heavy rain.
How to Read the Jacket’s Material and Label
When checking a jacket’s tag or product description, look for these key details:
- Waterproof rating (mm) – tells you how much water pressure the fabric can withstand.
- Breathability rating (g/m²/24h) – shows how well moisture escapes.
- Fabric type – such as polyester, nylon, cotton, or a technical membrane.
- Surface treatment – DWR or similar coating that repels water.
If you can’t find the numbers, the product description often gives clues. Terms like “rain jacket” or “shell jacket” usually mean waterproof, while “softshell” or “windbreaker” often means breathable and wind-resistant but not fully waterproof.
Which Jacket Should You Choose?
It depends on how and where you’ll use it:
- For everyday wear in the city: A water-resistant jacket with good breathability is usually enough.
- For running or cycling: Choose a lightweight, breathable, and windproof jacket that can handle sweat and movement.
- For hiking and outdoor adventures: Go for a waterproof shell with high breathability—especially if you’ll face changing weather.
- For winter use: Combine a windproof outer shell with insulating layers underneath.
The key is finding the right balance between protection and comfort. A fully waterproof jacket can feel stuffy during high activity, while a breathable softshell might not hold up in a downpour.
