Why Your Body Sweats
Sweating is your body’s primary way of cooling down. When you exercise, your muscles convert energy into movement and heat. To prevent your core temperature from climbing too high, your brain signals your sweat glands to release moisture onto the skin. As that sweat evaporates, it carries heat away, cooling you down.
How much you sweat depends on several factors: workout intensity, air temperature, humidity, and your individual physiology. Some people sweat more than others, and that’s perfectly normal. What matters most is that your body can effectively release heat.
When Heat Becomes a Challenge

That’s why the layering principle works best: a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating middle layer, and a wind- or water-resistant outer layer. This setup allows you to adjust your temperature by adding or removing layers as needed.
Hydration: More Than Just Water
Sweating doesn’t only deplete water—it also drains electrolytes like sodium and potassium, which are essential for muscle and nerve function. During long workouts or hot conditions, replacing these electrolytes is key to maintaining balance. Signs of dehydration include dry mouth, dark urine, headache, and reduced performance.

The same principle applies to cold weather: over time, your body becomes better at conserving heat and responding to temperature changes. The key is gradual exposure—build up intensity and duration slowly so your body can adjust safely.
